On the border between the old and new city of Prague, the new building of the National Library of the Czech Republic will be erected, with a total area of 40,000 m2. The proposal envisages an open-air building from the city to the river, where the bookshelves are in the basement and the reading rooms and support services on the floors, in two towers around the main hall of the library. The general archive of the state is housed in a vertical tower embedded in the “heart” of the building. The mass of the building is analyzed into three structural volumes – one inside the other – that function metaphorically as open boxes for packaging the books, open to the city and to the sky of Prague.
